Writing

In writing, we will continue to work on writing through the lens of a history. During this bend of writing, we will develop more focused research reports. We will learn to make use of primary sources in our informational writing and to think about themes and perspectives. We will also continue developing command of conventions such as capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing. We will expand, combine, and reduce sentences for meaning, reader/listener interest (audience), and style.

Word Study Focus: Word structure and usage of possessive nouns

Science

In science, we will continue with our study of space with a focus on our driving question: How can we better understand space systems through big ideas found in the cross-cutting concepts, including:

  • Patterns
  • Cause & Effect
  • Scale, Proportion, & Quantity
  • Systems & System Models?

Math

In math, we will begin our focus on unit 5. Within this unit, students study volume as an attribute of solid figures. Students develop an understanding of volume and explore ways to measure it. Students explore the concept of volume by first filling solid containers with cubes and then observing and discovering the mathematical formula. Students compare volume by using cubes to build rectangular prisms. Students discover that the volume of a right rectangular prism can be calculated by multiplying the area of its base by its height. Students discover that the volume of a right rectangular prism can be found by multiplying its lengths, width, and height. Students work with determining the volume of composite figures that are composed of rectangular prisms.

Reading

In reading, we will focus on short literary text in whole group. Focusing on key ideas, details, inferencing and summarizing text information will be important during this unity of study. The students will read novels in small group and at home. We will engage in literature circles and students will complete a project based on their novel. It is expected that students read at home for at least 20 minutes a night. The project details will come home with students.

Writing

In writing, our grammar focus will be on how conjunctions join words, phrases, or clauses (parts of sentences) to make complete sentences. We will revise and edit our narrative writing pieces using our 5th grade checklist. We will conference with our writing buddy and teachers to get multiple perspectives on how to get the message across to the reader.

Science

In our Earth Systems unit explore the ecosystem of the Chesapeake Bay. We will use the link below to explore the 64,000 square miles that makeup the Bay watershed, which is home to more than 18 million people.

Math

In math, we will continue to explore patterns in the number of zeros of the product when multiplying a number by powers of 10, and explain patterns in the placement of the decimal point when a decimal is multiplied or divided by a power of 10. We will apply concepts of whole-number exponents to denote powers of 10.

Reading

In reading, we will continue to read our novels and determine the theme based on the details in the text, including how characters in a story respond to challenges or how the speaker in a story reflects upon a topic and then summarize the text.

Writing

As we progress through our narrative writing unit, we will continue to develop and strengthen our writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach. In addition, we will analyze other author’s for writing techniques to use in our own craft. Our grammar focus will looking at how verb tense shows past, present or future time.

Science

In our Earth Systems unit we will discover that not all resources are renewable. Nonrenewable resources are those that cannot be replaced quickly enough to keep from running out. We will study the fact that materials that form very slowly are nonrenewable. Coal, oil and natural gas formed slowly from the remains of plants and animals that lived long ago.

Math

In math, we will explore patterns in the number of zeros of the product when multiplying a number by powers of 10, and explain patterns in the placement of the decimal point when a decimal is multiplied or divided by a power of 10. We will apply concepts of whole-number exponents to denote powers of 10.

Reading

In reading, we are reading novels and applying the skill of summarizing. We will summarize a written text read aloud or text presented in diverse media and formats, including visually, and orally. We will also be summarizing the points a speaker makes and explain how each claim is supported by reasons and evidence. Our class read aloud is a Mystery and students will be doing a book project on a mystery of their choice.

Writing

As we continue with narrative writing, we are focusing on leads and elaborating on important parts of our stories. We will focus on slowing down the action, telling it bit-by-bit, adding dialogue, giving more details, showing small actions and adding internal thinking.

Science

We will develop a model using an example to describe ways the geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and/or atmosphere interact.

Math

We will begin Unit 2 this week, starting off with recognizing that in any multi-digit number, a digit in one place represents 10 times as much as it represents in the place to its right and 1/10 of what it represents in the place to its left.

Reading

We will continue with informational text, mainly science texts and be able to determine two or more main ideas of a text and explain how they are supported by key details. We will summarize the text. Additionally, we will use the information read to support our science project in the form of creating brochures, posters, infographics and digital presentations.
